Another year has gone by as Lincoln Chapel once again
prepared for Donut Day. As the day approached, the church was a buzz with
people talking about donuts and orders and help. It didn't take long for
the community to know Lincoln Chapel donuts would be available again this year.
As the "big day" arrived, helpers found the coffee on
in a cozy, warm kitchen at the church. As I entered the church, the aroma
of yeast greeted me at the top of the stairs and I knew there were people
already working, mixing the dough. What a delight I saw when I found
Margaret West at the mixing table, donned in her apron, mixing ingredients.
As I talked to Marcia later, I hear of the eagerness Margaret shared in wanting
to help make donuts. 4:30 a.m. found Margaret's alarm sounding and
Margaret leaving the comforts of her warm bed. As she got ready to try her
hand at donut making, Pastor Jon also rose to greet the day. I met
Margaret upstairs around 7 a.m. to find her heading for home to prepare for
school. I know donuts were greeting Margaret (and the rest of the West
family) when they arrived home from school that day.
Dozens and dozens of donuts were sold even before the
day had begun...a whooping 325 dozen were already waiting to be delivered or
picked up. Each year we wonder if there are enough signed up to help and
yet the overwhelming response of help never ceases to amaze us. Just like
previous years, Lincoln Chapel's congregation arrived to join in the fun of the
day. Some come to pick up donuts and decide to stay for a while and help
as in the case of Audrey VonNeida this year. Upon arriving for her donuts,
she was told to stay a while and the next thing I knew, she was bagging donuts.
Orders were being filled, deliveries were being made
and donuts kept pouring out of the kitchen. As the day drew closer to
afternoon, the orders had reached to 350. By 2:00 donut orders will filled
and we found ourselves with extra...about 50 dozen. Within 45 minutes
almost all of those were sold and we realized we had only 11 bags left.
Soon even that count lowered to 7. And so, the total dozens sold were 401
dozen - a new record for the church. Last year's record of 390 was broken!
And how much was raised for missions? A profit of $1,278.48 was made.
The United Methodist Women would like to thank everyone
who has helped to support another successful donut day. With your help,
the group is able to support missions affecting the lives of women, children and
youth in our local area and also nationally and globally.
