Blast From the Past
     Remember the 50s – the time of hula hoops, 3D movies, poodle skirts, poodle hairdos, saddle shoes, rock and roll, jukeboxes, drive in restaurants with car hops (at such a restaurant you sat in your car and were waited on by waitresses in roller skates), bobby sox, Ducktail hairdos, letterman sweaters or jackets, Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, James Dean and Elvis Presley?
     Recently the Secret Sisters girls and ladies caught a glimpse of that wonderful era. As the ladies arrived at the Mifflinburg United Methodist Church, they were welcomed by Margaret West and Joanna Vanatta who were adorned with adorable poodle skirts. Tables were decorated with ‘45s’ of music from the era reminding us of songs like Rock Around the Clock by Bill Halley and The Comets, Mister Sandman by the Chordettes, Blueberry Hill by Fats Domino, Good Golly Miss Molly by Little Richard and more.
     Chatter around the tables included those wonderful bygone days, when things were less hectic, filled with great music, and costs were cheaper.
     Once all had arrived, the ladies were treated to a true summer meal of barbecue, salads, fruits, and chips prepared by the women of the Mifflinburg Untied Methodist Church. The red and white theme including the 50s music was even carried over to the cake!
     After lunch, the Secret Sisters were treated to ballroom dancing presented by Keith and Cindy Orndorff who danced to 50s music. Keith and Cindy demonstrated different dances, including Swing, the Fox Trot, the Stroll, Cha Cha, the Tango and the Rumba. It was fun to see those of all ages learning these new dance steps. Our hats off to Sharon Lowry and Cathy Bryner for their exuberant energy which encouraged others to follow suit.
     After our dance demonstration and lessons, the ladies began opening their gifts from their secret sister. Twenty seven girls and ladies participated in this third Secret Sister program and each was pleasantly surprised when their Secret Sister was revealed.
     The Secret Sisters unanimously agreed they would like to participate in another Secret Sister event in the future. It seems Margaret and Joanna have more planning to do! They both did a fabulous job! Thank you for such a fun time!
