Molasses Ginger Cookies

2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup shortening
1 1/4 cups sugar, divided
1 cup light molasses
1/2 teaspoon grated orange peel
Heat oven to 350f. Whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon and cloves in bowl. Add egg, molasses, and orange peel. Beat until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Reduce speed to low and add dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Place remaining ¼ cup sugar in pie plate. Shape dough into 1 inch balls, roll in sugar in pie plate, dough will be sticky. Place balls 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 10 to 12 minutes. Makes 5 dozen.
