Wesley’s Definition of Methodist
A Methodist is one who lives according to the method laid down in the
Bible.
He is one who loves the Lord with all his heart, who prays without ceasing
and in everything gives thanks. His heart is full of love to all mankind, and is
purified from envy, malice, wrath and every unkind affection.
He keeps all God’s commandments from the least until the greatest. He
follows not the customs of the world. He cannot speak evil of his neighbor any
more than he can lie. He does good until all men, neighbors, friends, and
enemies.
These are the principles and practice of our sect. these are the marks of a
true Methodist. By these alone, do Methodists desire to be distinguished from
other men.
