America’s First Sunday School

In 1875, a layperson named William Elliot decided that his children, the plantation servants and their children, needed a Bible study class. William Elliot lived in Accomac County, Virginia, and it was there in his home that he began teaching lessons each Sunday evening. The Sunday school class was so well received that other children and adults soon joined the study group. classes were formed for various age groups.
In 1801, Mr. Elliot moved the classes to the nearby Oak Grove Church. That is generally believed to be the first Sunday school established in America.
